CHIM. Alcool terpénique dérivé du menthane, de formule C10 H20 O, extrait de l'essence de menthe poivrée, utilisé en médecine comme antiseptique et comme analgésique, en confiserie et en parfumerie comme substance aromatique. Pommade de menthol (Codex, Nouv. Suppl., 1908, p. 11). Le menthol s'obtient aussi par la synthèse chimique (Ac. 1935). Plusieurs malades (...) étaient penchés sur les inhalateurs. Une vapeur qui sentait le menthol et l'eucalyptus emplissait la petite salle (MARTIN DU G., Thib., Épil., 1940, p. 760). Le menthol se présente sous forme de cristaux incolores, à forte odeur de menthe, insolubles dans l'eau, solubles dans les huiles et les solvants organiques, lévogyres (Lar. Méd. t.2 1972). Le menthol est le principe actif qui donne à la menthe ses propriétés médicinales stimulantes et digestives (CLÉM. Alim. 1978).
